Many transitions fail because of insufficient preparation, not because the horse is barefoot. The hoof must become stronger, more elastic and more wear-resistant before the shoes are removed.

Why preparation matters so much

The transition does not start when the shoes come off — it starts months earlier.

A common mistake is to remove the shoes and only then begin supportive measures. At that point, the hoof is often not yet prepared. Nail holes also weaken the hoof capsule, making the hoof more prone to chipping and loss of load-bearing capacity.
