®️ Thrush: Causes, treatment and subsequent damage

Thrush is a bacterial infection of the hooves in horses that affects the frog.
In addition to the usual causes, nutrients also play an important role in hoof health. Here are the causes, treatment options and sequelae of thrush, including the role of nutrients:

Causes:
1. Nutrient deficiency - 80% of all frog or hoof problems are caused by metabolic problems caused by over-acidification and detoxification difficulties. This causes a nutrient deficiency in the hoof
2. Humidity: Wet and muddy conditions and poorly maintained
Stables promote the growth of bacteria.
3. Lack of hoof care: Irregular trimming and cleaning of the hooves
leads to the accumulation of dirt and bacteria.
4. Poor stable hygiene: An unclean stable with a pH value that is too high promotes the growth of bacteria that cause thrush.
5. Misalignment of the hoof: Misalignment leads to uneven loading, circulatory disorders and promotes the development of thrush

Treatment:
1. Regular hoof care: Regular cleaning and trimming of the hooves
by a qualified farrier or hoof carer.
2. Dry environment: Make sure the stable is kept clean and dry to prevent bacterial growth.
3. Use high- quality hoof care products as a preventative measure. It is important that the hoof care product has a PH neutralizing effect, is breathable and promotes the moisture balance of the hoof.
4. Nutrient treatment : Coordinated nutrients promote hoof quality and the regeneration process in cases of thrush. Here, you should rely on products that promote metabolism and also promote detoxification. The hoof is a reflection of the entire organism.
5. For deep frog cracks, use horn pads .
6. It is very important to know that thrush always has to heal from the inside out. If only the surface is treated, it will heal on the surface, but underneath the horn will continue to decompose and the thrush will keep coming back. Special therapy products must be used for treatment that use penetrating oils to penetrate deep into the frog, form a barrier and then regenerate the frog from the inside out. ( Blue Stuff ) We recommend using a frog cleaner before every therapy treatment so that the number of bacteria is reduced in advance.

Consequential damages:
1. Chronic thrush is often the precursor to thrush cancer.
2. Chronic inflammation: Untreated thrush can lead to permanent
Inflammation and pain. This results in lameness.
3. Tendon problems: Thrush can lead to overloading of the tendons. The cause of tendon problems is often not associated with thrush. The cause is circulatory problems in the tendon caused by thrush, which also causes a lack of nutrients in the tendon. The tendons become brittle and vulnerable. The healthy frog also absorbs the horse's footing load. In the case of thrush, this shock absorber of the hoof mechanism is missing and the tendon is subjected to increased strain.
4. Painful thrush leads to the horse adopting a protective posture, which results in back and shoulder tension.
